NEW YORK, NY — August 28, 2024 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — The New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF), the nation’s premier Latino film festival, kicks off Latino Heritage Month from September 15 to 22, 2024, with an impressive roster of more than 130 films from nearly 20 countries, to be held, once again, at Regal Union Square (850 Broadway, NYC).

Opening Night will be held for the first time at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre (18 Minetta Lane, NYC), Audible’s creative home for live performances in New York. This year’s Festival opens with the World Premiere of Clemente (2024, 101 min., USA), directed by David Altrogge and executive-produced by LeBron James and Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater. The feature-length documentary explores the life, career, and legacy of baseball great Roberto Clemente, who opened the door for future generations of Latino baseball players. The Festival closes with a free block party in Washington Heights featuring live music, food, games and more! For more information on NYLFF 2024, visit www.nylatinofilmfestival.com.

Making its World Premiere is PBS’ VOCES American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos (2024), co-created by actor and activist John Leguizamo and award-winning filmmaker Ben DeJesus. The three-part documentary chronicles Leguizamo’s journey throughout Mexico and the U.S. to shed light on the known and lesser-known stories of Latino history. ESPN proudly presents Las Amazonas de Yaxunah (2024, 52 min., Mexico), directed by Alfonso Algara and narrated by actress Yalitzia Aparicio. The compelling documentary shines a light on the remarkable spirit and determination of an extraordinary Mayan women’s softball team from the Yucatán region of Mexico as they shatter gender stereotypes and overcome immense challenges to pursue their passion for softball. Starring Melissa Barrera (In the Heights), NYLFF presents Your Monster (2024, 102 min., USA), a romantic-comedy-horror film about soft-spoken actress Laura Franco, who finds her voice again when she meets a terrifying, yet weirdly charming monster living in her closet.

“NYLFF returns once again to honor and present the enormous richness and diversity of the Latino community through cinema. A champion of diverse voices in storytelling, we invite everyone to be a part of this shared experience and emerge with a deeper understanding of our realities. ¡Asi somos!" said Calixto Chinchilla, Founder, New York Latino Film Festival.

“As we approach Latino Heritage Month, it is especially important to identify the ways in which our industry is working to preserve and express Latino culture, identities, and experiences,” said Dennis Williams, SVP and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Warner Bros. Discovery. “WBD is honored to return to NYLFF as the presenting sponsor and to celebrate Latino filmmaking with its audiences and community.”

"We are thrilled to support the New York Latino Film Festival, which showcases diverse storytelling for New Yorkers to enjoy during Latino Heritage Month,” said Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, Pat Swinney Kaufman. “From the opening night film about baseball’s Roberto Clemente to the world premiere of a film by NYC’s own John Leguizamo to the closing night block party in Washington Heights, there truly is something for everyone. Congratulations to Calixto Chinchilla and team on what is sure to be another terrific festival.”

Festival Highlights

This year, NYLFF will once again present an exciting line-up of feature films in various forms, including feature, documentary, and shorts from the United States and Latin America. Highlights include Amazon MGM Studios’ presents Pimpinero: Blood and Oil (2024, 132 min., Colombia), directed by Andrés Baiz (Griselda, Narcos) with the acting debut of artist and songwriter Juanes. Set in the early 2010s, this gripping thriller takes place in the treacherous desert bordering Colombia and Venezuela, where gasoline smugglers or pimpineros risk their lives transporting illegal fuel. The Studio will also present Unstoppable (2024, 116 min., USA), directed by William Goldenberg with a star-studded cast: Jharrel Jerome, Jennifer Lopez, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, and Don Cheadle. The uplifting sports drama tackles the inspiring true story of one-legged wrestling champion Anthony Robles. Singer Luis Fonsi makes his acting debut in Say a Little Prayer (2024, 102 min., USA) about art gallery owner Adela, whose grandmother pressures her to say a prayer to St. Anthony- the patron saint of ‘all things lost’ to find her a husband. With a star-studded cast, including Ed Harris and Natalie Morales, My Dead Friend Zoe (2024, 101 min., USA) the dark comedy-drama follows the journey of a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran who is at odds with her family thanks to the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her dead best friend from the Army. For shorts, the Festival presents Contours (2024, 12 min., USA), executive produced by Issa Rae (Insecure), a story that is centered on a role-playing game that goes hopelessly awry as a deaf couple desperate to rekindle their spark finds the reconnection they seek in their shared experience over an abstract sculpture. From the Caribbean comes the SXSW 24 award-winner Bionico’s Bachata (2024, 80 min., Dominican Republic), the story of a hopeless romantic, addicted to crack, who must take control of his life if he wants to marry the woman he loves.

The FUTURO Digital Conference returns, presented by Max and produced by Deborah Renteria of Culturista, with a day-long forum spotlighting top content creators and distributors, mobile app companies, and mobile technology leaders targeting the market. To complement the Festival, FUTURO presents an exciting new roster of web series, including Latino Chronicles NYC (2024, 7 min., USA/Dominican Republic), centered on seven stories converging in different parts of New York City, highlighting the challenges faced by New Wave of Latin artists seeking to make their way in the city; Based on actual events, This Boy’s Vida (Made in America) (2024, 25 min., USA) an American Latino boy, with the help of his imaginary future self, dreams of being an actor turns "Robinhood" to feed his starving sisters, until the system catches up with him and forces him to choose between his family or dreams; and The LAnd (2024, 8 min., USA), is a response to the gentrification-fueled displacement of Black and brown people across Los Angeles that acts as a love letter to the city that raised many Angelenos.

🎙️ Honored to be a guest on “The Empower Hour”—The Women Radio Network LIVE! to discuss “Women’s Voices: Overcoming Obstacles.”

🌿 Every woman has a divine purpose that can be realized at any age, season, and stage of life.
No dream is too late, and no obstacle is too great when faith, perseverance, and purpose lead the way.

🧖‍♀️ I also shared why self-care is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Our mental and physical health are the foundation of our strength, creativity, and calling. When we care for ourselves, we honor the God-given purpose within us.

💖 To all women walking through challenges—remember, your story matters. Your voice has power. And your purpose is unstoppable.

🎧 Thank you, The Women Radio Network, for amplifying women’s voices and creating space for honest, empowering conversations. The episode can be streamed on YouTube Live and anywhere you listen to podcasts tomorrow.

💚Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. Special needs families experience mental distress 5 times as often as those without disabilities.
🧩 Joshua is a child who is autistic and had a new diagnosis of focal seizures last year. Through prayer and medication, he has been great and has not had a seizure in many months! 🙌
💔However, yesterday, we were unceremoniously informed that Joshua had been dismissed from the private special needs school he had attended for almost five years and that his last day of school was today. The only reason was that the school’s leadership did not want to administer the (easy) life-saving emergency seizure rescue medication he needs if a seizure occurs at school.
💉The medication is an injection that is given in the arm or leg if he has a seizure. To quote the Doctor who showed us how to do it: “This is so simple even a child can do this.”
✏️The school where I have served as President of the Parent Teacher Fellowship for the past two years has seen my family and me dedicate countless hours volunteering over the last five years—not just with our time or sweat equity but also by contributing resources, expertise, monetary support, promoting initiatives, &, most importantly, showing loyalty.
🙌 As a mother, advocate, and #SpecialNeeds Pastor, we move forward the same way we always have, especially where Joshua is concerned—in total faith. Some things occur that we don’t understand why they are happening at the time or place they did. Only God knows the answer to that. (Deuteronomy 29:29). All we have to do is trust and believe that He knows what is best. He wants us to live a whole and abundant life. (John 10:10). Joshua’s life verse is “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11).
What was meant for harm will be turned around for good. This temporary test will be added to our testimony.
Joshua’s life has already been the launchpad and inspiration of @HopeTorchlighters, #BuddyBreak, & others that support #specialneeds families. This sweet boy will continue to thrive & God will continue to use Him! 🙌💙 #TeamJoshua #JoshuasAngels

I thank our beloved Sr. Pastors Dr. @pastortonymccoy & @pastorjodiemccoy for taking the time to honor the Pastoral Team at @hopeinternationalchurch! Serving alongside such a loving group of Pastors committed to God and the community is a true blessing. Through @hopetorchlighters, we've made a difference in the lives of over 4,000 families with special needs and neurodiverse members in Lake County and across the U.S., online since 2018. We offer #BuddyBreak Respite Care, Beacon of Hope Support Group, holiday meals and gifts, educational classes, activities for children and adults, therapy, and more. When I'm not at church on Sunday, I am privileged to share life's moments with these families — from attending a birthday party for a child with a disability to counseling an entire family to understand that a child's diagnosis isn't just the parents' duty but also a family responsibility to love and care for that child. Here's to many more blessings — the best is yet to come! Happy Pastor Support Appreciation Day! #pastor #pastorsappreciation #specialneeds #hopetorchlighters #drjoscelynramoscampbell

🇺🇸Dad was a survivor of the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. Sadly, he is now officially recognized as one of the thousands of victims who passed away (almost 20 years later to the day) due to an aerodigestive illness from the fumes that he breathed that day. I’m sharing his story once again so that we never forget, especially for the younger generations. See in the slides above. ➡️ Let’s always remember the fallen heroes among the first responders, law enforcement, victims, their families, and survivors.

🇺🇸 The loss of lives in wars, battles, and attacks has a lasting impact on history. 9/11 was no exception, with nearly 3,000 people dying in coordinated attacks at the World Trade Center buildings in New York, the Pentagon, and a field in rural Pennsylvania.

🇺🇸In the years since the attack, tens of thousands of first responders, law enforcement, and survivors have died (or become gravely sick) due to cancer or aerodigestive illnesses because of their exposure to noxious gases, dust, and chemicals. More people have died from 9/11-related illnesses than were lost in the initial September 11, 2001  attacks, according to the 20th Anniversary Special Report from the “Never Forget the Heroes” Act and CDC. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland wrote in the report, “…it is important to acknowledge that the tragedy of that day continues.”

🇺🇸 May we remember and pray for the victims and all those still suffering the effects of 9/11 physically, emotionally, and mentally. May God give everyone the comfort they need. We will never forget and we will remember our fallen heroes, brothers, and sisters today and always.

Daddy 🕊️ March 11 - September 6 🕊️
🕊️My beloved father (and mother) had extraordinary careers and often appeared on television, in newspapers, and on the radio. My Cuban father’s career began when he was recruited to play professional baseball in the U.S. He later became an international delegate, diplomat, and fair wage contract negotiator. He created opportunities and provided jobs for many people, and their descendants continue to benefit today.
🕊️On any given day, he could be in the trenches fighting for the rights of shipyard workers to have proper gloves and materials to protect them. That night, he would fly in a jet with Frank Sinatra for a benefit.
🕊️As Google and SEO continue to digitize legal records, books, and important historical facts, I frequently receive Google Alerts with my mother’s or father’s names. The latest alert came this past week regarding my father and a Senate meeting about the closure of sugar refineries. At that time, 7,000 men and women had lost their jobs due to the decline in exports of refined sugar. My father’s name appeared in Congress and at Georgetown University.
🕊️The dash between the two dates represents a person’s birth and passing. His extraordinary life was remarkable from beginning to end. His generosity and care have touched countless lives.
🕊️He walked the earth with kings, celebrities, and heads of state. Now, he walks with our Almighty King and his beloved Queen, my Mommy.
🕊️Your earthly departure was five years ago, but it still feels like yesterday. This is a testament to your enduring legacy, wisdom, and love. Te amamos para siempre. 🇨🇺 🇺🇸 ♥️
