Tips for Middle School Students To Try This School Year

in back to school, education, families, parenting on 08/15/17

Seriously, ready or not, school is about to start again! With that comes long days for kids and parents, from shuttling back and forth to school, extra curricular activities, homework, and the list goes on! Before you start to worry and stress, check out our list for middle school students.  These tips are helpful to help middle schoolers study more effectively, search for information on internet, stop hitting that snooze button and more! We hope it will help your middle school child, get up and be ready to tackle the day at hand a little bit easier, and more confident.

Pomodoro Study Technique

An effective style of studying, it is a great way to manage their time. This technique let your child hunker down and learn, but also have breaks in between. The Pomodoro Technique is very popular and used all around the globe. Here is how this technique works, if you want to have your child try it out!

  1. Set a timer for 25 minutes, during that time your child will work until the timer goes off.
  2. Once timer rings, put a check mark on a piece of paper or sticky note.
  3. If they have fewer than four check marks, they get to take a 5 minute break.
  4. After the break, they set the timer for 25 minutes and repeat the steps.
  5. After four  (check marks) pomodoros, they get a longer break (15-30 minutes). If they still have work, they restart the whole process.
Better Way to Google

When your child has to hop on Google to do some research, instead of Google.com have them use, scholar.google.com.  This will bring up more relevant topics, and help them find the information they are looking for a lot quicker. It weeds out all the unnecessary information in the google search! Also, don’t forget the importance of conducting research and studying at your local library.

Chew Gum While Studying

Researchers found that chewing gum can help recall memory! So if your child is studying for a big test, let them munch on a piece of gum. Then if they can have gum in school let them eat the same flavor of gum during the test, to help recall what they studied about!

Photograph Chalkboard

If your child’s teacher writes homework assignments on the chalkboard or whiteboard, have your child take a picture with their phone. This is a great way to look in the pictures on your child’s phone to make sure they didn’t miss any homework assignments. Granted writing down the assignments in their agenda is the easiest, but sometimes kids forget!

Color Code Notebooks

If your child is taking multiple notebooks to school for taking notes and assignments, consider grabbing a sharpie, and coloring by the bind on top part of notebook. That way when your child goes to grab a notebook, they can see pink is for science, orange is for math, etc. They can color code it however they want, and it will make knowing which notebook is needed for each class.

Remembering Class Schedule

If your child will be moving from room to room during the day, and find it hard to remember the schedule at first, here is an awesome tip! Take a screenshot on their smartphone of their class schedule. Have them set this as their wallpaper on the lock screen on phone, so when they go to the next class, they can quickly see what class is next.

Set Clothes Out The Night Before

If your child struggles getting around in the morning, have them take the time the night before to put out all their clothes, including shoes and accessories the night before. That way in the morning they can grab it and put it on. If they struggle still, make them lay out two different options so the day of, they can pick. This can help get them out the door on time a lot easier.

Hand Write On Index Cards

When studying for a test or exam, have your child hand write out information on index cards. This is a great way to help retain the information a lot easier than just reading it. Then have them say what they wrote down out loud, and repeat until they think they have remembered the information. Then the morning of, have them look over the cards before they head out for school to trigger and remind themselves as what they studied!

We hope by implementing these simple but effective tips, your middle school student will be ready to start the school year on the right foot!
