Who Left the Lights On? Choosing to Save with Lutron Electronics Occupancy Motion Sensors and Giveaway

in brands, families, giveaways, parenting, reviews, savings, technology on 08/17/13

Whether there are many people living in a home or just a few people, the lights will undoubtedly be mistakenly left on at some point.  In a home with a husband, teen and young twins,  the lights can get left on at anytime as they move hurriedly about the house.  I can often be found going through the house shutting off lights or reminding everyone else to do so when they exit a room.  We recently had the blessing of building our new home and as relatively new homeowners a major priority is being conscientious about spending.  It’s important to be able to save and cut costs and leaving lights on in a vacant room is not a cost-effective practice.

In an effort to save, we are glad to have teamed up with Lutron Electronics and their “Who Left the Lights On?” campaign.  In a recent survey, 90% of Americans said that someone in their household forgets to turn the lights off when they leave a room.  Lutron has developed products that help to eliminate the “who left the lights on?” question and as an added layer of convenience.  The Maestro Occupancy Sensor C.L. Dimmer and Maestro Occupancy Sensing Switch automatically turn lights off and on.

Maestro sensor switch

The Lutron Maestro Occupancy/Vacancy Sensing Switch can automatically turn lights on when you enter a room and off when you leave, so you don’t have to worry about lights being left on when nobody is in the room.

Features

  • Works with incandescents, halogens, dimmable compact fluorescents (CFLs) and dimmable LEDs, no special wiring required
  • Patented Ambient Light Detect senses daylight—only turns lights on when there is not enough natural light present
  • Proprietary Advanced XCT™ sensing technology detects fine motions to ensure lights stay on when rooms are occupied and allows for sensitivity level to be adjusted
  • Reliable on/off sensing performance up to 30 feet
  • Can function in two modes:
    • Occupancy mode: automatically turns lights on when entering a room, keeps them on while someone is present, and turns them off after they leave
    • Vacancy mode: manually turn lights on when entering a room and the sensor automatically turns lights after someone leaves

Benefits

  • Adds convenience and energy-‐savings to any room by automatically turning lights on and off
  • Offered in a variety of colors to match décor
  • Complements Lutron family of Maestro® smart controls including dimmers, fan controls and timers

Lutron Product Photography

The Lutron Maestro Occupancy Sensor CL Dimmer conveniently incorporates the benefits of an occupancy sensor and a dimmer into one product. This new sensor dimmer turns lights on when a person enters a room, keeps them on while they are there and shuts them off when the room is vacant. Users can also dim the lights, adding ambiance to the room. The Maestro Occupancy Sensor CL Dimmer works with various light bulbs, including incandescents, dimmable compact fluorescents (CFLs) and dimmable LEDs.

Features

  • Proprietary Advanced XCT™ sensing technology detects fine motions to ensure lights stay on when rooms are occupied and allows for sensitivity level to be adjusted
  • Product can be set to auto-‐on/auto-‐off or manual-‐on/auto-‐off
  • Adjustable timeout can be set to shut off lights after 1, 3, 5, 15, or 30 minutes
  • Patented Ambient Light Detect senses daylight—only turns lights on when there is not enough natural light present

Benefits

  • Delivers savings of 60% lighting energy
  • Lutron’s CL dimmers ensure a reliable performance when it comes to dimming CFLs and LEDs – no need to worry about flickering, lights not turning on or turning off unexpectedly

The products can be self-installed in about 15 minutes and no special or additional wiring is needed for the installation.  We installed on one of Lutron Maestro Occupancy/Vacancy Sensing Switch in our high-traffic hallway to the garage.  The video can be seen below:

I would put one of the motion detector switches in my garage and the other in the hall near the stairway. Neither light needs to be on for any length of time, but light is needed to unlock the door to the house from the garage or to go down the stairs.

I would use the Maestro Occupancy Sensor CL Dimmers above the kitchen sink

This is fantastic! My kids have been driving me nuts, with the lights. They are constantly flicking the light switch on, and fighting over whether the light should be on or off. I love the sleek design, very nice! 🙂

My mother recently moved into our house after my father passed away. It would help to have the sensor lights in her room (so she doesn’t have to strain herself to turn off the lights) and in the hallway (so she can easily see the bathroom in the middle of night). It would be a help to our family. Thanks for another great giveaway!

The holidays can be beautiful… but for many grieving parents — especially special needs parents — this season hurts in ways most people never see.

Between disrupted routines, sensory overload, and the ache of missing someone you love, December can feel overwhelming. And here’s what most don’t realize:

Nearly HALF of Christians stop attending church after losing a loved one… not because they’ve lost their faith, but because they feel the church doesn’t know how to walk with them through grief.
These families aren’t leaving God —
they’re leaving because they feel unseen in their pain.

As someone who advocates for families of ALL abilities, I’m sharing a new blog post today on how we can support grieving loved ones — especially special needs parents — with compassion, faith, and presence this holiday season.

If someone in your life is grieving, please don’t stay silent.
Say their loved one’s name.
Offer specific help.
Create space for their emotions.
Pray with them.
Walk with them — gently, consistently, faithfully.

Because no parent should have to grieve alone during the holidays.

🏆 Earlier this week, I was once again filled with thankfulness, love, and faith.
🏆 I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Home Health Care USA for naming me the “Latina American Caregiver of the Year!”
🏆 Caregivers are among the unsung heroes in our society, and there are many different types of caregivers. For instance, the “Sandwich Generation” refers to individuals who are caring for both their aging parents and their children simultaneously. These caregivers often provide physical, emotional, and financial support. More than 50% of Americans in their 40s and 50s are currently caring for both their children and their senior parents—and usually without any help from extended family.
🏆 Some caregivers dedicate their entire lives to caring for a child—or children—with disabilities into adulthood. Unfortunately, many caregiving parents or family members do not get a break or have quality time for themselves. About 50% of couples with special needs or neurodiverse children end up getting divorced.
🏆 Having experienced both of these caregiving situations and still living within them, being named “Latina American Caregiver of the Year” means more to me than just an award. It symbolizes the millions of unpaid caretakers across the country who provide loving, effective care for family members or friends.
🏆 I also want to extend my gratitude to all those who have followed my caregiving journey the past 17 years, including my care for my beloved late parents and my superhero, Joshua, on my social channels, Mami of Multiples, and Dr. Joscelyn Ramos Campbell. The BEST is yet to come! 🙌
🌎 Lastly, congratulations to all my fellow winners standing on stage. Your work in your communities helps make the world a better place!
