The Importance of Spending Quality Time with Our Family from What’s In The Bible

in brands, entertainment, faith, families, family outing, food, parenting, technology on 07/11/11

As part of the What’s In The Bible Street Team and being a fan of What’s In The Bible (WITB) series I often visit the What’s In The Bible website.  In addition to information about the WITB products the site features resources, advice and tips for families, parents, children, churches and schools.

Recently I read a post on the WITB site titled “The Importance of Spending Quality Time with Our Family“. Its a subject that I have often discussed here on MamiofMultiples.com with some examples being here, here and here.  As a wife, mother to a teen and toddler identical twin boys and home based business owner, I have to ensure that I am prioritizing to spend quality time with my family. I could relate to Lisa (the author of the WITB post), the example given of a typical night at home with the family and the suggestions on how to make quality time with the family in the everyday moments.

I wanted to share the post since it served as a great reminder that quality family time can be created daily and anywhere.

The Importance of Spending Quality Time with Our Family

It’s 8pm. Mom is sitting on the sofa, reading her Kindle. Dad is on his iPad playing with a newly downloaded app. One kid is in his bedroom texting with friends from school, and the other kid is watching TV—essentially alone.

Does that sound like a weeknight at your house? If so, you may be among a growing statistic. Many families are having a hard time staying connected with each other in this high-tech world we now live in. I don’t believe technology is the enemy, but time management may be.

How do you stay connected as a family living in the 21st century? Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

I’m Latin; therefore my first idea revolves around food! Bring back the family dinner! Not just once a week, but as many nights as the schedule allows. Some will tell you that it’s sitting down to eat a meal together that’s most important. Maybe that’s true, but I find that preparing the meal together is a lot of fun! I find it to be the time when we laugh the most and have the fewest “walls” up. Even the tightest-lipped teenager will talk during meal preparation for some reason! Get in there and make a mess with your kids and your husband. If you have little ones have them help by tossing the salad, setting the table or adding ice cubes to the glasses. Everyone has a job! I’ve found that older kids love to get the opportunity to cook! If schedules won’t allow time to cook together, then by all means be together over whatever meal you do have! Chick-fil-a works just as well as homemade baked chicken when quality-family time is the focus!

Have you heard of Family Game Nights? Before our recent move, Wednesday’s were our game night. We’ve slipped a little over the last three months, but I really miss doing it! We made Wednesday the no-TV night at the house. Instead, we would choose what game we’d play together. You can do this as a group decision or take turns on a weekly basis. If the weather is good, bring those games outside! Miniature golf, horseshoes, beach volleyball, street baseball /football; whatever your family loves to play—just do it together!—And be active together!

Take an after dinner walk together. I personally LOVE this one. When’s the last time you enjoyed a casual walk with the family? I’m not talking power-walk, either. As a child, I remember doing this many times. We lived in the suburbs, so our walks consisted of just a few blocks…and on some summer nights, we’d walk an two blocks up to Thrifty’s where an ice cream cone was a special treat! Unlike car trips, walking somehow opens up dialogue with the family. (See how food found its way into this? I’m hopeless!)

This may seem obvious, but worshipping together is vitally important to family life. Children and teens who lack religious connections today will be the spiritually indifferent adults of tomorrow. (The Patriot Post-archived). I think we can see what our society looks like when many who have a voice in education and government are spiritually indifferent. Faith makes a difference, and for a Christian, it is our foundation. Go to church together. If the church you are attending isn’t meeting your needs, then find one which does. Worshipping and learning God’s Word together is such a fundamentally important family activity!

Studies show that a characteristic of strong families is that they spend time together. Quality, fun times spent with parents is so important to children’s growth and development. Children will definitely appreciate the memories of these family activities! The great news is that the initial result of just spending a little more time in family centered activities will greatly strengthen your family bond.

With the kids off from school during the summer (and throughout the year) try to reconnect and stay actively involved with your family.  The quality time spent together as a family will help to create loving memories and habits with those that matter most.

Wonderful post! I learned about What’s In The Bible from your site and we now own episodes# 1-4. The kids really enjoy it and us adults learn something too.

Finding time to do everything you have to do as a Mom and still findting time to work, cook, clean, take care of the kids, spouse and some time for yourself can be very challenging.
If you don’t make it point to create family time, it can certainly go by the wayside. Great tips!

The holidays can be beautiful… but for many grieving parents — especially special needs parents — this season hurts in ways most people never see.

Between disrupted routines, sensory overload, and the ache of missing someone you love, December can feel overwhelming. And here’s what most don’t realize:

Nearly HALF of Christians stop attending church after losing a loved one… not because they’ve lost their faith, but because they feel the church doesn’t know how to walk with them through grief.
These families aren’t leaving God —
they’re leaving because they feel unseen in their pain.

As someone who advocates for families of ALL abilities, I’m sharing a new blog post today on how we can support grieving loved ones — especially special needs parents — with compassion, faith, and presence this holiday season.

If someone in your life is grieving, please don’t stay silent.
Say their loved one’s name.
Offer specific help.
Create space for their emotions.
Pray with them.
Walk with them — gently, consistently, faithfully.

Because no parent should have to grieve alone during the holidays.

🏆 Earlier this week, I was once again filled with thankfulness, love, and faith.
🏆 I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Home Health Care USA for naming me the “Latina American Caregiver of the Year!”
🏆 Caregivers are among the unsung heroes in our society, and there are many different types of caregivers. For instance, the “Sandwich Generation” refers to individuals who are caring for both their aging parents and their children simultaneously. These caregivers often provide physical, emotional, and financial support. More than 50% of Americans in their 40s and 50s are currently caring for both their children and their senior parents—and usually without any help from extended family.
🏆 Some caregivers dedicate their entire lives to caring for a child—or children—with disabilities into adulthood. Unfortunately, many caregiving parents or family members do not get a break or have quality time for themselves. About 50% of couples with special needs or neurodiverse children end up getting divorced.
🏆 Having experienced both of these caregiving situations and still living within them, being named “Latina American Caregiver of the Year” means more to me than just an award. It symbolizes the millions of unpaid caretakers across the country who provide loving, effective care for family members or friends.
🏆 I also want to extend my gratitude to all those who have followed my caregiving journey the past 17 years, including my care for my beloved late parents and my superhero, Joshua, on my social channels, Mami of Multiples, and Dr. Joscelyn Ramos Campbell. The BEST is yet to come! 🙌
🌎 Lastly, congratulations to all my fellow winners standing on stage. Your work in your communities helps make the world a better place!
