Shawna Martell

Hi there! I’m Shawna, a self proclaimed “beginner mom” leading my family on an instinctual path towards living a balanced life of organics and attachment parenting practices! I am beyond excited to be joining the Mami of Multiples Team!

My husband, David and I are high school sweethearts, living in Central Florida with our daughter Payton and two pups. I’ll admit, we have put each other through some tough stuff on our journey to responsible adult-ing, but are on the road to becoming stronger than ever. Continually growing as individuals, and more importantly as friends, we are learning how to be teammates in this new parenting world. Dave is a Disney cast member, and his hard work is the primary reason I am able to stay home with PJ. Major props to you hubs!

For the last 7 years I have worked in the field of special needs. First as a teacher at a private school in south Florida, and later at a children’s ABA Therapy center as an assistant to the company president. When PJ was born I began working part time for them from home, and continue to do so today. I am also a proud Tower Garden team member, sharing my love for easy and fruitful gardening! (shawnamartell.towergarden.com), as well as part of the street team to promote MommyCon Orlando in September!

MommyCon is a nationwide convention series dedicated to creating and nurturing a community of parents and parents-to-be in celebration of natural parenting. (Feel free to use the promo code below when registering for MommyCon).

So here I am, inviting you to join me down this sometimes comical path of life and love as I dive head first into my upcoming adventures of Mommying through toddlerhood with a natural parenting perspective. I hope to be a source of reflection and information for you as I share my raw personal experiences with all things “crunchy” including breastfeeding, babywearing, cloth diapering, co sleeping (more specifically bed sharing), baby-led weaning (in relation to starting solids), homeopathic remedies and essential oils, beyond organic gardening, and whole health living!

Thank you for your kind words Sheila! I can assure you my family doesn’t look nearly this well put together on a daily basis, but it sure is fun to pull out the “fancy pics” every now and then, isn’t it?! I’m excited to hear your thought on my future posts as someone who values the motherhood tips featured here!

I had never heard the term “crunchy” or “crunchy parenting” until today. I’m a newbie mom too so I’m looking forward to reading your posts. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Tanya! Congrats on becoming a new mommy! I often use the word crunchy to describe myself, and you’ll see I may also refer to my “hippy-ways” every now and then! I love it and I’m so excited that you’ve found my column! I hope you are able to get some great information and enjoyment from my posts. Thank you for reaching out!

That’s so kind of you to say Richard! Honestly, I would love for other new moms (and dads!) to know they aren’t alone on this learning adventure!

The holidays can be beautiful… but for many grieving parents — especially special needs parents — this season hurts in ways most people never see.

Between disrupted routines, sensory overload, and the ache of missing someone you love, December can feel overwhelming. And here’s what most don’t realize:

Nearly HALF of Christians stop attending church after losing a loved one… not because they’ve lost their faith, but because they feel the church doesn’t know how to walk with them through grief.
These families aren’t leaving God —
they’re leaving because they feel unseen in their pain.

As someone who advocates for families of ALL abilities, I’m sharing a new blog post today on how we can support grieving loved ones — especially special needs parents — with compassion, faith, and presence this holiday season.

If someone in your life is grieving, please don’t stay silent.
Say their loved one’s name.
Offer specific help.
Create space for their emotions.
Pray with them.
Walk with them — gently, consistently, faithfully.

Because no parent should have to grieve alone during the holidays.

🏆 Earlier this week, I was once again filled with thankfulness, love, and faith.
🏆 I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Home Health Care USA for naming me the “Latina American Caregiver of the Year!”
🏆 Caregivers are among the unsung heroes in our society, and there are many different types of caregivers. For instance, the “Sandwich Generation” refers to individuals who are caring for both their aging parents and their children simultaneously. These caregivers often provide physical, emotional, and financial support. More than 50% of Americans in their 40s and 50s are currently caring for both their children and their senior parents—and usually without any help from extended family.
🏆 Some caregivers dedicate their entire lives to caring for a child—or children—with disabilities into adulthood. Unfortunately, many caregiving parents or family members do not get a break or have quality time for themselves. About 50% of couples with special needs or neurodiverse children end up getting divorced.
🏆 Having experienced both of these caregiving situations and still living within them, being named “Latina American Caregiver of the Year” means more to me than just an award. It symbolizes the millions of unpaid caretakers across the country who provide loving, effective care for family members or friends.
🏆 I also want to extend my gratitude to all those who have followed my caregiving journey the past 17 years, including my care for my beloved late parents and my superhero, Joshua, on my social channels, Mami of Multiples, and Dr. Joscelyn Ramos Campbell. The BEST is yet to come! 🙌
🌎 Lastly, congratulations to all my fellow winners standing on stage. Your work in your communities helps make the world a better place!
