Tips to Celebrate National Grandparents Day with TracFone

in brands, families, reviews, savings, technology on 09/10/15

Disclosure: As a Tracfone Family Ambassador, the following is a sponsored post, however, opinions expressed here are clearly our own.
September 13th is National Grandparents Day in the United States. More than a reason to sell greeting cards, this annual event recognizes the strength, love and guidance grandparents provide to families.

grandparents

Unlike decades past when many family members (including grandparents) lived near one another, today’s families often reside far away from each other and in various states across the country. My immediate family and I are fortunate to live in a neighboring community to my parents. Being the youngest of my siblings, and my parents having me later on in their life, it’s a priority to me that my children get to spend quality time and grow up around my parents. Tradition is very important to my family and we are a blend of Puerto Rican, Cuban, Spanish, Italian, and Caucasian ethnicities. As the ‘baby boomer generation’ gets older, many traditional and festive customs can sometimes disappear or be forgotten with time.

National Grandparents Day is a great opportunity to spend time with grandparents and learn about family customs and traditions. Children can learn a lot about family history by spending time talking with their grandparents and comparing their life stories. TracFone understands the importance of staying connected with your family and is helping America celebrate loved ones this National Grandparents Day. From the first tooth fairy visit to the winning soccer goal and everything in between, TracFone helps capture special moments with nationwide service and 90-day no-contract plans that start as low as $19.99 (averaging less than $7 per month*), giving grandparents, families and friends an affordable way to stay in touch through photos, videos, text, email, social media and of course, a phone call. *A month equals 30 days. Airtime Service Plan required for activation.*

In honor of National Grandparents Day, TracFone will be having special sweepstakes and giveaways on Facebook and Twitter. On Facebook, TracFone is hosting a #LoveIsGrand sweepstakes from Monday, August 31st through Sunday, September 13th. Each week, TracFone will publish two shareable eCards with a question and fans just have to leave a comment using the hashtag #LoveIsGrand for a chance to win. Four (4) randomly selected winners will receive a #LoveIsGrand Grandparents Day prize pack. One randomly selected Grand Prize winner will receive a #LoveIsGrand Grandparents Day grand prize pack.
  • Prize Packs (4 total): One (1) Alcatel Pop ICON, one (1) 90-day airtime card, and one (1) $100 Visa gift card
  • Grand Prize (1 total): One (1) Alcatel Pop ICON, one (1) 90-day airtime card one (1) $1,000 Visa gift card to be spent towards quality family time with the family’s grandparents.

The following are a few tips on how grandchildren and grandparents can celebrate Grandparents Day together:
  • Spend Time Talking – Grandparents are a wealth of information not only about family stories, but are witnesses to history and have firsthand knowledge of various historical facts. Families can ask questions like what their grandparents were like when they were young, where did they live? Did they know their own grandparents? What did they do for fun? What did they eat or drink? Record answers or videotape their answers for future generations and for historical preservation. Help grandparents stay connected with TracFone’s variety of phones! For grandparents who already own a smartphone, TracFone’s innovative “Bring Your Own Phone to TracFone” (BYOP) program is a great option to connect with family this National Grandparents Day. All you have to do is bring your phone over, and you can keep your old number or get a new one. Just visit http://bit.ly/TracFoneBYOP to check your phone’s compatibility and activate your new no-contract TracFone plan.
  • Create Activities – My young twin boys like to go to my parents’ home because they do many hands-on activities and crafts with them. Technology and gadgets are put aside for learning and creative play. The twins like to help my parents tend to their garden and plants. My parents purchased complete “gardener” outfits for the boys and the boys help to water and plant with their age-appropriate tools. My mother has a gift for creating crafts and designing. She often makes crafts with them (like a cardboard box aquarium or handprint family tree) using simple everyday objects that also teaches them English and Spanish words along the way. The boys are having fun and learning at the same time.
  • Review Family Pictures and Objects – My teen had to do a genealogy project at school and he sat with my parents and looked over old photographs and videos for research. Since my father (and mother) had a high-profile political career in New York, my teen found out that my mother kept albums full of newspaper clippings and articles about my father and his job. Included were photos of my parents with politicians and celebrities of the era. Taking an interest in his grandparents’ history, my son gained a newfound appreciation for my parents and a positive sense of self-worth knowing our family’s background. Family objects (like heirlooms) give an opportunity to share history, the importance of family ties and having a tangible item helps to discuss heritage and traditions in a way children can understand and relate to.

The journey of being a parent and caregiver to a VIP child or adult with medical or neurodiverse needs is unlike any other. It can be a daily battle across states (and countries) to find quality care and services that are needed for their proper development. It's why one of our goals at @hopetorchlighters torchlighters for the past 8 years has been to continue sharing resources and providers that are not only “insurance approved” but also “VIP approved”. Our superhero has been blessed with wonderful occupational therapists throughout his journey. Among them is First Steps Therapy @firststeptllc in Leesburg, and we are grateful to Ms. Sarah, Ms. Denise, and to be reunited with Ms. Dee again. 🙌 #OT #autism #specialneedsparenting #hopetorchlighters

🕊️Happy Heavenly Birthday, My Beautiful Mommy! You are deeply missed and loved every day. Your influence is felt in many ways, from the endless love you gave and your wonderful sense of humor to the strength of character and faith you carried. You consistently supported numerous people, organizations, businesses, non-profits, and churches for over 50 years.
🕊️It is very important to me—and to your grandsons—to continue honoring you (and Daddy) on your special days and by living a life that reflects the trailblazing lives you both led. More than that, it’s the faith and love you instilled in us. The loss still feels fresh, as if it happened yesterday. When someone irreplaceable is no longer physically with you, it’s not something you simply “get over.”
🕊️ I am grateful that I saw how you and Dad handled your grief over losing your parents. You both kept living fully, enjoying all of God’s blessings while still honoring, remembering, and grieving for your parents—my beloved grandparents—for the rest of your lives. As the end approached for both of you, just 18 months apart, you both gave me the greatest gifts any daughter, who was also your caregiver, could ever ask for; you both told me how proud and thankful they were of me as a woman, mother, daughter, in my career, and in the life I had chosen to be with them. It was a blessing from God that I could be with you throughout my life and in your final moments.
🕊️ Thank you for being my Mommy, my best friend, the best Mama for your grandsons, and everything I could ever need. I will love you for all eternity.
