From The Frontline Thursday with Gabrielle Morel: Father’s Day for Deployed Soldiers

in contributors, easy recipes, families, holidays, latinos, military on 06/16/11

Father’s day is this Sunday, a day to celebrate these wonderful men in our lives. Many Fathers will be overseas away from their families. So how do you celebrate Father’s Day when he’s deployed? Well I have some ideas I would love to share with you all.

As many of you know, my Husband is currently deployed so I can’t cook him his favorite meal and celebrate that special day with him. So instead I sent him two care packages, one filled with toiletries and other must haves. In this first box I sent along his gift and Father’s day cards from the kids. I included any drawings or finger paints the kids drew, and I also typed up a letter for him. I then printed out a 4×6 picture and added it to the box. While the second box, I sent him, had cakes in a jar. I was able to fit four mason jars in the box with bubble wrap. I decorated the jars with ribbon, and used a hot glue gun to secure them to the jar. I also allowed my daughters to decorate the inside of the box with finger-paints, glitter glue and stickers.

These are two of the cakes I made. His birthday is a few days after Father’s Day so I glued Candles to them.

Theme Care Packages:
I also know there are a few Military spouses that own care package businesses. They decorate the inside of the box, and personalize it for you. One example is Missyourvoice.net, the owner creates theme care packages and will fill the box with goodies you request.  http://www.missyourvoice.net/

You can also decorate the box yourself. I’ve used construction paper to line the inside and am considering using gift wrapping paper for my next care package. You can find a lot of arts and craft things for cheap at the 99 cent store, and have your children help out in the decorating. 🙂

I did send these care packages out a week ago around June 8th, and they still haven’t arrived. So this might not be the best last minute option. However for anyone who knows their Husband will be deployed next Father’s Day, this is a great idea to keep in mind.

Virtual gifts:
E-card: If you know your deployed Soldier has internet access you can send him an E-card. I’ve used Hallmark.com and they do have a limited selection of free e-cards, but their other E-cards aren’t too expensive. They also send you an email letting you know when your e-card was viewed, which I happen to think is pretty cool. 🙂 http://www.hallmark.com/

Smilebox:  This is an application you download to your computer, which is free, and it uses all of the photos and videos on your computer to create slideshows, greeting cards, or scrapbook pages. The neat thing about this application is you have so many options to share your creations—you can use Facebook, blog, email, print at home or at a store, and even burn it to a DVD. So if you have time you can print or burn these to a DVD and send them in a care package overseas. And, if you’re short on time you can email it or post it on Facebook! 🙂 www.smilebox.com –This is also good for other holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and even just to send a “Thinking of you” slideshow.

This is a screenshot of my creation for my Husband.
Feel free to share any ideas you have for gifts this Father’s Day while your soldier is deployed. J

    Leana,

    Thank you so much. 🙂

Love this post! When military members are deployed, these kinds of holidays (Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays) can be tough for the servicemember & family. Great suggestions!

This is a great post Gabrielle! I used to make care packages for hubby when he went out of state to find work. Each of those packages were so important to him, since he couldn’t be with us for hugs and kisses or sleep with us at night (the worst). These are such great ideas! Thanks so much for sharing! <3

Very sweet idea. I didn’t know you can bake a cake in a mason jar. Those jars are like magic.

The journey of being a parent and caregiver to a VIP child or adult with medical or neurodiverse needs is unlike any other. It can be a daily battle across states (and countries) to find quality care and services that are needed for their proper development. It's why one of our goals at @hopetorchlighters torchlighters for the past 8 years has been to continue sharing resources and providers that are not only “insurance approved” but also “VIP approved”. Our superhero has been blessed with wonderful occupational therapists throughout his journey. Among them is First Steps Therapy @firststeptllc in Leesburg, and we are grateful to Ms. Sarah, Ms. Denise, and to be reunited with Ms. Dee again. 🙌 #OT #autism #specialneedsparenting #hopetorchlighters

🕊️Happy Heavenly Birthday, My Beautiful Mommy! You are deeply missed and loved every day. Your influence is felt in many ways, from the endless love you gave and your wonderful sense of humor to the strength of character and faith you carried. You consistently supported numerous people, organizations, businesses, non-profits, and churches for over 50 years.
🕊️It is very important to me—and to your grandsons—to continue honoring you (and Daddy) on your special days and by living a life that reflects the trailblazing lives you both led. More than that, it’s the faith and love you instilled in us. The loss still feels fresh, as if it happened yesterday. When someone irreplaceable is no longer physically with you, it’s not something you simply “get over.”
🕊️ I am grateful that I saw how you and Dad handled your grief over losing your parents. You both kept living fully, enjoying all of God’s blessings while still honoring, remembering, and grieving for your parents—my beloved grandparents—for the rest of your lives. As the end approached for both of you, just 18 months apart, you both gave me the greatest gifts any daughter, who was also your caregiver, could ever ask for; you both told me how proud and thankful they were of me as a woman, mother, daughter, in my career, and in the life I had chosen to be with them. It was a blessing from God that I could be with you throughout my life and in your final moments.
🕊️ Thank you for being my Mommy, my best friend, the best Mama for your grandsons, and everything I could ever need. I will love you for all eternity.
