Top 5 Recommended Bible Studies

One of my favorite things to do in ministry is leading Bible Studies. I have been blessed to serve The Lord in this capacity for many years. Women often ask me what are my favorite studies or ask specific questions about certain ones that I have done personally or led. I have led many studies but some of my favorites are ones that I was a participant in. Hopefully in the future, I will have the opportunity to lead some of these that I have mentioned below. I have completed over 20 Bible studies and led 8 in these past 2 years. I love Bible studies because it makes it personal to me, but a huge benefit for me is the accountablity. Knowing that we meet each week to discuss what we learned, helps keep me accountable to do my studying. I love hearing how The Holy Spirit speaks to people in such a personal way.

Below is a list of my top 5 favorite Bible studies, some are specifically geared to women while others are not. Even if its a “Women’s Study,” I still recommend them for both, and the points in the studies are applicable for men and women.

1. Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God
by Henry and Richard Blackaby (Personal Study)

Experiencing God

This is my all time favorite Bible Study. Not because it was fun, enjoyable and easy. Its quite the opposite. It allowed me to search my heart on how to deepen my relationship with Christ. The first chapter is “God’s Will and your life,” and this was a great introduction to this life changing study. This is the longest Bible study that I have been part of, which was 13 weeks, but every week was essential in developing your relationship with God.

This study has sold millions of copies worldwide, Experiencing God is based on 7 Scriptural realities that teach us how to develop a true relationship with the Creator. By understanding how God is working through us even as we try to fathom His ways, we can begin to clearly know and do His will and discover our lives greatly and gracefully changed.

“Real Christianity is not merely a religion; it is a relationship with a Person.”

This study is great for new believers, as it teaches the foundation of our Christian faith, but its also great for seasoned believers. We are never too old to learn!

2. Armor of God
by Priscilla Shirer (Women’s Study)

The Armor of God

This study truly opened my eyes to what was going in the spiritual world, without me being fearful. Priscilla focuses on the passage, Ephesians 6:10-19, and v.12 impacted me in my daily life. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” -Ephesians 6:12

We have to remember that the real enemy in our lives is satan! Not our husband, not our family members, not our friends, not our acquaintances, but the devil.

“Being a believer doesn’t give you immunity from the assaults of the enemy, but it does give you access to the power of the Father-His power to defend you as well as reverse what’s been done to you.” -Priscilla Shirer.

GLORY TO GOD!! Reading that again, made me stand a little straighter 🙂 I led these in 2 different settings. One was in the young mom’s study and the other was with more “seasoned” women. Both were different discussions on how this study affected them in their season of life. This is my top pick for “Women’s Bible Study.” I cannot wait to lead this one again! The Armor of God, more than merely a biblical description of the believer’s inventory, is an action plan for putting it on and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory. This is a 7 week study.

3. Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer
by Priscilla Shirer (Women’s Study)

Fervent

This one wasn’t actually a “study,” but after I read a few chapters, I knew I had to lead this in a Bible study setting. (I pray for specific direction from the Holy Spirit on each study and the demographic).

Fervent is a wonderful companion to the Armor of God study.

We read a couple of chapters each week and discussed the principles and had a specific time of prayer. We were serious and strategic in our time together.

We have an enemy . . . and he’s dead set on destroying all you hold dear and keeping you from experiencing abundant life in Christ. What’s more, his approach to disrupting your life and discrediting your faith isn’t general or generic, not a one-size-fits-all. It’s specific. Personalized. Targeted.

So this book is your chance to strike back. With prayer. With a weapon that really works. Each chapter guides you in crafting prayer strategies that hit the enemy where it hurts, letting him know you’re on to him and that you won’t back down. Because with every new strategy you build, you’re turning the fiercest battles of life into precise strikes against him and his handiwork, each one infused with the power of God’s Spirit.

At the end of each chapter, she closes with a “call to prayer.” She shares awesome Bible Scriptures and encourages us to write out prayer strategies on note cards that are found in the back of the book. This book is for every woman!

4. James: Mercy Triumphs
by Beth Moore (Women’s Study)

James: Mercy Triumphs

I have done several Beth Moore studies and this one impacted me the most, especially in this season of my life. Each of her studies, dig deep, so be prepared to be in your study time for at least 45 minutes a night.

This study focuses on the book of James. James, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. James is a book in the Bible that has extremely great wisdom and insight. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” We need wisdom in EVERY aspect of our life, so why don’t we ask God for it? This study goes into depth the 5 chapters of James, but leaving you wanting more.

Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer. I love that we get to know the brother of Jesus in this study. Everyone in this world is important!

5. Financial Peace University
by Dave Ramsey (Group Study)

Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University

This is a nine-week class and it might seem a little pricey, but let me tell you…its worth it!!! You’ll learn Dave Ramsey’s seven easy-to-follow Baby Steps to create a budget, get out of debt, and make a plan for your money! Plus, your Financial Peace University membership includes 16 weeks of online access to view each lesson anytime!

My husband and I took this class 6+ years ago and have applied Dave’s principles, but sometimes you have to be reminded. We are currently leading this class and we determined to get debt free as soon as possible. Not only that, we want to start saving for retirement so that later we can “live like no one else.”

There are videos that accompany this study are essential for you learning the material. Dave is very energetic and excited about helping people with their finances and its definitely contagious.

Not only is this highly effective in our financial life, Dave teaches that this effects our spiritual lives as well. God has called us to bless others, but how can we if we are drowning in debt? The beautiful thing about our finances is that we can start anywhere, we don’t have to be financially ready to get wealthy. But we do have to be diligent, consistent and willing to say no to things. One of my favorite sayings of Dave’s is, “live like no one else, so later you can LIVE like no one else.” This class is very hands on, as each week there is a reading assignment, making a budget and actively doing things to complete the baby steps.

Also, some great (bonus) books to read, that can be done as a study are:

A.) Fasting
by Jentezen Franklin

Fasting

We have participated in the Daniel’s Fast for the last 5 years and each year I read this book to prepare for the 21 day fast. This is a great book to educate you on fasting and the reasons to fast. Mr. Franklin explains the spiritual power of fasting and offers a deeper understanding of God’s plan for fasting and the benefits available to those who participate. The book contains inspiring and practical information that readers need to know in order to access the power of biblical fasting. Those who seek God through fasting can expect tremendous rewards for their personal lives as well as for the church. They will see breakthroughs in many areas such as healing, finances, unhealthy dependencies and family relationships. This book also gives stories of those who have reaped miraculous rewards from this simple act of faith.

A definite must read! There is also a “Fasting Journal,” that you can purchase to read along with the book.

B.) Sun Stood Still
by Steven Furtick

Sun Stand Still

The premise of the book is that most Christians fail to live life to the fullest, and never take advantage of the awesome power that is available to us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and access to the Father through prayer.  He speaks directly to Christians who long to take their faith to the next level, Sun Stand Still seeks to change readers’ lives. He encourages believers to pray audacious prayers. This is easy to understand and read.

If you have any questions about certain studies or authors, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Happy Studying!!!!

LEGOLAND Florida: A Must-Experience Destination for All Families

At the beginning of the school year, I challenged my 2nd grader to get all A’s for the entire year. I told him that if he were to do that, he could pick anywhere to go and I would take him there in the summer. Well Jude didn’t disappoint, he put his nose to the grind stone and did the work to get straight A’s! At the end of the school year I asked him where he wanted to go and he exclaimed, LEGOLAND Florida!!! So LEGOLAND it was!

LEGOLAND Florida

This was our family’s 1st time there and we had a blast! It really surprised me how much there were things to do, even for my 2 year old daughter. Usually theme parks have a couple of things for the “little guys,” but LEGOLAND takes the prize for having fun things for both age groups. I was very pleased!

Near the park entrance, they knew that it would be helpful to have a cool mist before we started our day.

1 legoland

The first ride we got on was the “Island in the Sky.”  The ‘Island in the Sky’ is a 150- foot rotating platform that gives you a 360° view of LEGOLAND.

The next stop was the “Duplo Train.” This was part of Duplo Valley, a land filled with activities and rides, specifically for “toddlers.” Avalyn had lots to do in here. But the big boys enjoyed themselves as well. There was also the Duple Tractor ride and play areas. It was so nice to cool off in the Duplo Splash Pad.

The next land we visited was the “Lego Kingdoms.” What a cool place! The ride that we went on was “The Dragon.” This is a roller coaster that starts with really neat lego creations and then you go on a fast adventure with lots of twists and turns. Definitely a must ride!

Another cool ride was “Merlin’s Challenge.” This is a mysterious wooden train powered by Merlin’s magic! Even my 2 year old enjoyed this one!!

The Land of Adventure was so neat! There was so much to see. The big guys went on the “Lost Kingdom Adventure.” They helped the adventurers battle LEGO mummies and skeletons to find the hidden treasure! What fun!!!

Land of Adventure

While the ride wasn’t too fast for my toddler they were fighting mummies and skeletons, so Mommy and Avalyn went to “Pharaoh’s Revenge. This outdoor attraction lets children and parents fire soft foam balls at enemies and explore the maze of the Pharaoh’s kingdom.

Pharaoh’s Revenge

We couldn’t leave this land without getting on the “Coastersaurus!” This wooden coaster curves and dips in and around a prehistoric jungle of animated and life-sized LEGO brick dinosaurs. Its amazing what they do with LEGOS!

Our next stop was “Miniland USA.” My favorite part of the day. What creativity these Lego designers have! Phenomenal!!! Miniland USA contains over 32 million Lego bricks and amazing scenes from coast to coast all the way to a galaxy far, far away! A must stop on your visit at LEGOLAND!

Star Wars at Miniland

We loved “Heartlake City!” This is the newest land based on the popular LEGO Friends line of toys. Avalyn loved all the girly lego creations.  A popular ride is “Mia’s Riding Adventure.” You get to pick your horse and saddle up for a ride on the exciting disc coaster! So much fun! And it helped to feel the cool breeze on a very hot day!

To get out of the heat, we went to the Wells Fargo 4D Theater.  4-D movies are shown throughout the day at LEGOLAND‘s largest indoor theater, with seats for more than 700 guests! I love that!! So many times, you go to a theme park and you have to wait a long time to get inside an “A/C” place, but with 700 seats, you are going to find a seat! The movie they played was “The LEGO® Movie™ 4D : A New Adventure,” complete with 3-D glasses and adventure. After each 4-D movie, meet some of your favorite LEGO characters outside the theater! This was a beautiful theater, even had the red carpet!

LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure

It started raining during our trip but no worries, we went straight to Imagination Zone. This is filled with amazing hands-on Lego activities! Next to the outdoor Kid Power Towers attraction, guests will discover a cool indoor space filled with colorful furnishings, floor-to-ceiling graphics, several awesomely themed “zones” and thousands of LEGO bricks awaiting assembly into whatever you can imagine! This gave us parents a time to sit down and enjoy the A/C while the kids enjoyed played and played!

One of the neatest areas there was the “Water Zone” in this hide away the room is decked out in underwater colors with full on coral reefs made out of LEGOS! There are a number of touch screen computers where the kids (and let’s face it some adults) could pick from three tropical LEGO fish to digitally build. Once assembled you get to color your fish uniquely and then click finish. Once you do the fish swims away from you and is picked up on the wall by a special projector that then shows your one of a kind fish swimming in a digital reef with all the other creations.

Jude really liked the “Flight Zone.” Kids can build flying contraptions to the limits of their imagination then put them to the ultimate test by racing their crazy creations against other kids’ designs on suspended ziplines. If you can build it, you can fly it! After the first try, Jude saw how it flew and revamped his design and it went flying really fast! Even adults have fun creating their designs!

The Technic Tot Spot was a spot that we played a long time! Lots of smiles and laughter! We even got to meet Nya and Kai in person!

At the end of our trip we visited Cypress Gardens. The beautiful and historic botanical gardens have been restored to pristine condition! Still standing sentinel in the garden is the vast Banyan tree that was planted as a seedling in 1939.

Cypress Gardens

On our way out of the park we had to stop at the Grand Carousel. This double-decker carousel is the centerpiece of Fun Town. Children can choose their favorite horse. Such fun!

Grand Carousel

There are so much that I like about LEGOLAND Florida.  On most rides, we only waited about 5-15 minutes! The short wait time is amazing for such a popular theme park and especially for visiting in the summer.

Another perk, they have set up Lego play stations for the kids to play while the parents wait! Wow, what a great idea!!! You don’t have to wait in the line while your child asks how much longer. You can tell this theme park is very well thought out and kid friendly.  We highly recommend families, with children of all ages, visit LEGOLAND Florida!

Good Luck and Happy Summer!

What’s a Moodsetter?

The definition of Moodsetter that the Lord gave to
Pastor Tony has changed the way I look at myself.

A Moodsetter is…

“A woman that understands that she has the power to control the atmosphere of her surroundings. She has the ability to embrace her role as a nurturer, supporter, leader, negotiator, entrepreneur, and lover while remaining supportive of her husband’s covering. She is a fighter, a noble individual that is confident and persistent: She is a true friend.” ©  –Tony McCoy, Pastor of Hope International Church

I am a moodsetter…

I think that every woman has the power to control the atmosphere of her surroundings. When one of us is mad, everyone can feel it. Especially those closest to us. You set the mood for your family. Are you pulling everyone down with your mood?

God has called us to be a nurturer. To be a nurturer is to take care of someone, to help them succeed. We can be a nurturer to our children, but also to our husband. We have been fashioned and designed to bring out the best in our husbands. We must see how valuable we are to him, to his success. My first priority is my husband and then my children. We shouldn’t be fighting to be the leader of our family. God has placed our husbands as our covering, as our leader. We must submit to them. Men are held to a higher caller because of the role they are in.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 3:7, In the same way you married men should live considerately with your wives, with an intelligent recognition of the marriage relation, honoring the woman as physically the weaker, but realizing that you are joint heirs of the grace (God’s unmerited favor) of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered and cut off.”

God created us to be physically weaker, but we are equal with them in Christ. God gave an order of submission for our families. Husbands, Wives, then Children. So many times we get this flipped. The children are leading the parents or the wife is leading the home. If we want to live to the fullest potential, we need to have this order in our homes. We need to trust God and His authority. Wives, we must honor the position that our husbands are in. They are our covering. I encourage you to treat them with love and respect, even when you don’t agree with them. Pray for them and with them.

I’ve heard this saying, “my husband is the head, but I am the neck.” You play an important role in his life.

Training our children, is not always joyful or easy, but it is necessary. Proverbs 29:17 says, “Correct your son, and he will give you rest; yes, he will give delight to your heart.” This verse puts a smile on my face. Because knowing this, brings me great comfort that he will bring me joy from all the hard times of rearing him in the right direction. What we do as moms, is not in vain, please remember that!

A true moodsetter uses her talents to set the atmosphere and strengthen those that find themselves in her company. They are go-getters and very much part of God’s plan. Understand that God has called you to be a moodsetter because He knows you are capable. Things should leave better because of you, because of your presence. Ladies, flood your home with godliness, change the negative atmosphere. Rejoice in the Lord of your salvation.

what's a moodsetter mami

The Moodsetter defintion is for all women, but I added Mami to my name, because God has given me that as one of my giftings. Declare today that you will take on these characteristics, so that they are more evident in your life.

Multi-Task with Structure

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.  2 Corinthians 4:8-10
The other day, somebody said to me, “The life of a mom is multitasking, that is what we do.” I said, “Yes, I know exactly what you mean, moms always have so much going on at one time.” But I think back to that statement…that is such an incorrect statement. Any WOMAN, not just moms, multitask. We do a disservice to women in general, when we say things like that. As women, we are natural multitaskers, we always have our minds going 100 miles a minute. I think as a woman of God, how can I multitask, but do it effectively. The above verse reminds me that no matter what I do, not matter how “hard pressed” I am, God is with me. However, a big HOWEVER is that God wants us to have an abundant life, but how? How can I live a busy life, but not be crushed by the demands of life?

multi task with structure pic

My Pastor is preaching a great sermon series titled “Breathing Room.” A couple of points that stood out to me are as follows.
1.
In order for you to have ‘breathing room’ and have an abundant life, you have to have structure. To be successful and fruitful in any area of our life, and especially in multitasking we must have a structure in place. “Wherever there is poor structure, there will be a breakdown.” -Pastor Tony   We must have “structure”  in our life. This is not just a suggestion from God, its a command. The Bible verse that comes to my mind is, “Let all things be done decently and in order.”-1 Corinthians14:40 No matter what we do, we have to have a “system” or “structure” of doing it, especially if we want to have a successful life.  Whether you are a millionaire, superstar or stay at home mom…we all get 24 hours a day, we must use every minute wisely. We can’t just say, “I want to have a successful career and be a millionaire, ” if we don’t have any structure in our lives. Think about “fit” people. They have to have a structure in place for their lives. For example, they eat healthy, exercise, and get enough rest. If you want to have a healthy lifestyle, you must implement the following things.
2.
The more you want to accomplish in your life, the more structure you have to have. We have to be disciplined to be effective. We have to get the rest we need, so that our minds work effectively. We need to do some kind of exercise to keep healthy and feel good about ourselves. We need to eat well balanced meals. We all feel better when we take care of our bodies. Women, we give and give and give until we are all worn out. We have to put the “oxygen mask” on ourselves first, before we try to help others. Think for a minute…what were some of your New Year’s Resolutions? We made them in January and didn’t keep them. Start today and put structure in your life. You made those resolutions for a reason. The important thing is, forgive yourself and keep it moving. I find for myself that I need to put together a “to do list” daily. It may sound redundant to write them down, but even little things that you take for granted, write them down. Since I am busy, multitasking, I may forget something because I’ve got so much going in my mind that I forget things that I should remember. Even if you start small with structure, start with that and watch the results start coming.
3.
Follow Jesus’ example. Jesus had a structured way of prayer. He got up early and went alone and prayed. It’s time, Ladies! In order to multitask effectively, we have to put God first. Start your day with Him. Before you do anything else, and that includes looking at your phone for text message or Facebook notifications, get up and say “Thank You Jesus” and start your day with prayer. If you can, get alone and pray and read your Bible. Talk to Him. Your day will go much better if you start it talking to your Best Friend. You may be asking, okay Xochil, where do I start with this structure thing in my busy life? Ask God. He tells us in James 1:5, ”If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” He has created you! He knows you, He knows your busy life. But He waits for you to ask Him. Friend, go to Him with a heart filled with FAITH and EXPECTANCY  that when you ask God for wisdom, He delights to give it to you.
The following is the link to the message on Breathing Room from Hope International Church in Groveland, Florida: Weekly Live Webcast by Hope International Church
I pray that as you read this you will be encouraged to implement structure in your life, so that you can have “breathing room” in your life.  Bless You!

Xochil Elmore Headshot

Hi, I am Xochil, I am small town girl with a big heart. I have lived in the South Lake County area for almost 12 years, but was raised in Mt. Dora, Florida. I am wife to the most wonderful and handsome husband in the world. God has richly blessed me with 2 beautiful children, Jude(7) and Avalyn(2). I am really excited to be a contributor to Mami of Multiples!

A former youth minister and children’s librarian, I have done a lot of different things in my short life. God has been so good to me. I am a disciple of Jesus, I attend Hope International Church, and I am the Women’s Bible Study leader at my church. I love to spend time with family and friends, enjoy game nights and love reality shows. One of my favorite quotes is,”You win if you don’t quit.” There have been times in my life that I had to say this over and over. I know that God has a special plan for me, and I give Him glory for all that HE is to me.

Some things I LOVE!!!

I love to read Christian fiction and People magazine. I love being part of MOPS (moms of preschoolers) group. I love Reality Shows! I enjoy – notice I didn’t say love – going to the gym. 🙂 I love roller skating. I love Bible studies, that is one of my most favorite things. I love Jesus with all my heart, soul and strength. There is nobody like Jesus. Last but not least, I love my family and friends, I am beyond blessed.

While I don’t have a perfect life, I do have the power of the Holy Spirit in me. I love sharing with other women the blessings of the Lord and how to get closer to Him on a daily basis. I love to encourage and uplift people, that is what the Lord has gifted me in. I love to share “nuggets” of wisdom that the Holy Spirit shares with me in my daily life as a woman, wife, mommy, daughter and friend. I continue to learn daily and would love to share with you through this column.
