#SiblingAppreciation 👦🏻👦👦 Joshua with #SiblingAppreciation 👦🏻👦👦 Joshua with his older twin brothers, his protectors. They grew up with their grandparents, in this last decade of us caregiving for them, while simultaneously loving & helping a special needs baby brother. Their empathy and understanding extends to others like their classmates, people in the community, special needs, and neurodiverse families they serve as youth teen leaders with @HopeTorchlighters and Buddy Break.
👩🏻‍⚖️ In a 2021 study from the Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability, it stated that Siblings often take over care and support roles (for their sibling with disabilities) when their parents are no longer able to perform such roles. Siblings are considered suitable as future caregivers, because Sibling relationships are the longest lasting family relationships and Siblings are seen as well equipped to estimate what their brother or sister with a disability wants, means, or feels. Moreover, according to the study, Siblings are inclined to enact a role in the future care for their brother or sister with disabilities. For example, they often take the role of primary caregiver, advocate, legal representative, financial planner and co-resident.

🥊 Today was another powerhouse message from Pastor Tony about “Breaking Traditions”. (Matthew 15:1-10). Many traditions are not bad in themselves, and even add a degree of richness and meaning to life. However, if your traditions, are not honoring your God-given purpose; if your traditions, are not protecting you (or your family); if your traditions are hurting you or others; or if your traditions go against God’s word, then your traditions 👋 have to GO!
🤲 Personally, it was such an incredible timely word. As I continue to serve, it was an important reminder for me to self-advocate so I can fulfill the purpose called over my life.

#CAREGIVERS When a person has a significant amount #CAREGIVERS When a person has a significant amount of responsibility, it can be hard to not focus in on what others won’t do, don’t do, & should do.
Serving as a caregiver is not a job suitable for a selfish person. Caregivers are required daily to purposefully put a priority on the needs of others, all while managing with their own internal & external challenges, desires, & individual goals. Life can be overwhelming at times, but for the Caregiver who is administering care for a family member, friend, or loved one, please remain ENCOURAGED.
It can be hard witnessing how able-bodied family members or friends elect to dismiss one’s needs while they watch a caregiver make daily sacrifices. Aim to not get distracted, because distractions come in all shapes, sizes, and situations. The enemy seeks to get your eyes off of the target which is your PURPOSE. Part of your purpose is to serve as a God-honoring caregiver to the one in need. Whether you are caregiving for a season, a short time, or your entire life, God sees YOU!
Distractions appear during the most pivotal points of life. Aim to not take your eyes off of the right target.
Constant communication with God in prayer, praise, and His word are significant guides in discerning between a distraction or a God-honoring focus. Losing focus while administering care has consequences, but staying focused in the midst of distractions produces fruitful results.
In scripture, The Shunamite woman served as a caregiver for her son when he took ill. After assessing the situation she laid her son on the bed, shut the door and focused on getting to the man of God who declared the promise of blessing over her. Although her son was in desperate need, she remained  focused and pursued God’s messenger, not allowing any distractions to stop her.
2 Kings 4:8 The Shunamite woman was faced with distractions, even by family members who questioned her. Yet, in the midst the obstacles, she didn’t allow anything or anyone to impede her focus on being a committed caregiver & getting her son the desperate help he needed.
Caregivers, continue to pursue God as you care for those in need. #ProtectYourPeace #Caregiver #SelfAdvocacy
💗 Often in the journey of being a caregiver & w 💗 Often in the journey of being a caregiver & when we need to receive care from others, you realize support does not necessarily derive from one's family. In the special needs communities, for various reasons like unacceptance to lack of understanding, support for special needs families can come from others.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 No matter, if you don't have a tribe or a supportive family, you do have a God who is always on your side. As a caregiver, who occasionally needs some caregiving, I have a unique perspective to experience the roles of caretaker & patient.
🥼Yesterday, I found myself searching for something in my email to give to my Doctor. Suddenly, an old email appeared in the search results. I wrote the email on the day of my wedding anniversary in 2014. I spent that day in the hospital with Dad & Mom, who was suffering from an emergency dialysis infection & cardiac failure. The email was truly from my broken heart—filled with such worry about them. I talked about my devotion to my ministry work & how I gave up some entrepreneurial work that they were proud of me for contracting. However, their wellness was my priority. I was desperately asking for prayers from some individuals. I was not asking for physical help for me but just prayers for them.
📆 Fast forward to yesterday, I had no idea why this email came up at this exact moment sitting at Doctor's office. The search term I typed in had nothing to do with this email. God used this situation to remind me that He is my provider. A prompting is a “knowing” on the inside, telling us what to do. I Kings 19:11-12 refers to this knowing as a still, small voice. When there was no way with Mom's health in 2014; He made a way & gave her another 5 years. There was often no family in the area, yet God provided the spiritual family we needed.
🙏 Today, God is still doing the same. I never thought I would still be on the caregiver journey. Yet, God still sees fit to utilize me for His purpose. I lost my parents & family are still not in the area, but He has provided one of the best spiritual familes. God provides what you need. Trust & believe always. #ThankYou #FromAGratefulHeart #Gracias
